Muinjij Island in Second Life®

Muinjij Island in Second Life® is based on the story, Muinji’j: Becomes a Man. Chief Mi’sel Joe of Conne River Newfoundland Canada wrote the story. The characters of the story include Muinji’j (a young boy) and his grandfather. Grandfather and Muinji'j start the long journey to bring goods to the trading post. Through various activities, grandfather teaches Muinji’j important life lessons. With the grandfather becoming ill part way through the journey, Muinji’j is left the responsibility to take the goods to the trading post and make the best deal possible that will enable him to bring back items required for the Miawpukek community to survive.

In 2008, Memorial University’s Distance Education, Learning and Teaching Support (DELTS) partnered with the Miawpukek First Nation of Conne River, Newfoundland and Labrador to develop an innovative project aimed at preserving and sharing the history and culture of the Miawpukek people of Conne River.

A representation of the Conne River landscape of the 1800’s, dress, music and artifacts have been created using 3D virtual technology.

You will be able to experience the journey of Muinji’j and his grandfather and participate in the learning activities provided. Additional information and learning activities can be found on the ‘Stories of Conne River’ website. http://www.storiesofconneriver.com

This project was funded through Canada Culture Online and Inukshuk Wireless.
