In 2008, Memorial University’s Distance Education, Learning and Teaching Support (DELTS) partnered with the Miawpukek First Nation of Conne River, Newfoundland and Labrador to develop an innovative project aimed at preserving and sharing the history and culture of the Miawpukek people of Conne River.
The Conne River project presents the story, Muinji’j Becomes a Man, written by Chief Mi’sel Joe. The components of this project include a website, virtual worlds of Second Life® and a DVD. The mix of learning material reaches across generations and learning styles. For this reason the project is relevant to education administrators, faculty members at the university level, instructional designers, teachers in the K-12 system and beyond. This project would be of interest to those interested in First Nations communities in Canada, ethno-cultural diversity, native history and culture.
